Temperature inversion in action

Temperature inversion occurs due to convection. Warm air, which rises, traps cold air below. This happens often on sunny winter mornings when the air at higher elevation is heated by the sun, trapping the colder smog below. 

It's a lot like swimming in a dirty fish bowl.
